Effective ways to land your first job as a fresh graduate

June 17, 2022

Finding a job as a college senior can be tricky depending on which industry you are in. Every field has its own set of rules on how you can secure your first job as a postgraduate in these Post Covid times. Here are some useful tips on how you can secure your first job as a fresh graduate :

Areas such as consulting, technology and finance hire early on in the school year, as compared to other fields. So if you are looking for a job in one of these industries, it is best to start applying during the summer before your senior year if you want to be the early bird that catches the worm.

For any other industry doing their hiring just in time, it is perfectly alright to start applying for jobs during their spring semester if they aim to be employed during the summer after they graduate. Career counselors and experts encourage graduating students to plan ahead. It is best if they start working towards their career goals in the fall, even if they plan on sending in job applications in spring the next year.

The class of 2022 can expect a ‘fierce ‘ job market, as per experts’ forecasts. Here are some tips to make job hunting easier:

Narrow down your interests:

Make a set of your priorities, qualifications, industry, and other determining factors before you go searching on a job website. Know what you can’t compromise on, and research the company culture before you go away sending applications. Most of the time, the students haven’t thought their non-negotiables through, and are naïve when searching for their first job, which can lead to a miserable job situation later.

Make use of college resources :

Your college career centers can prove very fruitful in your job search. The counselors there can help you with your resume, applications and determining career path. They can also help you prepare well for your first few interviews by setting up mock rounds for your practice.

Brush up your resume:

Your resume and cover letter are your representative in front of potential employers. Make sure it is updated with all relevant degrees, certifications and internships or summer jobs you have previously held.

You may think some of the details are irrelevant, but the little details can really give your resume that extra edge which can make you stand apart from your competitors.
