Success in Hollywood often depends on more than talent, and actor Will Ferrell believes one conversation with his father helped him understand that early in his career. While speaking about his journey, Ferrell revealed the advice that removed the fear of failure and gave him the confidence to pursue comedy without feeling trapped by the outcome.
During Wednesday's episode of the "IMO" podcast, Will Ferrell spoke with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson about the moment he decided to pursue acting.
At the time, he attended classes at The Groundlings, an improvisational and sketch comedy school in Los Angeles. As he gained experience, he realized the work "just feels right." Before making a career move, he asked his father for advice.
Instead of making promises about success, his father offered practical advice.
He told Ferrell, "If it was based on talent, I wouldn't worry about you. I'm going to tell you you've got talent, but there's so much luck." He also added, "Give it a shot, but don't get discouraged if you get down the road and you're like, this is just too hard. You didn't fail. You tried, and you're capable, just pivot and do something else."

Why the Advice Stayed With Him
Ferrell, known for movies like "Elf," still calls those words "the best showbiz advice ever." The conversation did not include a motivational speech. Instead, it removed the pressure to succeed.
Ferrell said the advice "took the pressure off succeeding." As a result, he focused on enjoying the experience instead of worrying about the outcome. He later recalled, "Well, I'm not going to make it anyway. Let's just have fun."
Many celebrities have shared similar stories about family guidance. Actress Rashida Jones said her father, Quincy Jones, encouraged her to use the opportunities available through her family's entertainment connections. He told her, "You're gonna go wait in line with 70,000 other people for a job? That doesn't seem really that practical." Jones later said, "And he was right, you know."
Singer and actress Selena Gomez also remembers advice from her grandfather. He often reminded her, "If you are on time, you're already late." She has said that lesson taught her the importance of punctuality.
Honest advice often leaves a lasting impact. Will Ferrell's experience shows that realistic guidance can reduce fear and build confidence. His father's words encouraged him to take a chance without treating failure as the end. That lesson continues to inspire people who face uncertain career choices.
